The Problem with Framing
Don’t get me wrong, a well framed print has a classic allure to it, and can look great in the right setting. However in my experience there are too many variables out of the artist’s control. The first is picking the right frame. Today, hundreds of combinations exist – white, black, or colored matting? Ornate or simple frame? Wood or metal frame? Colored or black frame? How large should the matting be? Then there is the fact that each image only works with a certain subset of these choices, and then a smaller subset of that subset will work well in the room the piece is to be displayed in.
All of these problems are eliminated with a Metal Print. The image stands on its own in the room of your choosing with no other decisions required. The ¾ inch inset frame, sets the image off the wall, giving it a unique almost frame-like appearance.
The second problem with a framed print is one of longevity. Many of my early prints were not stored or displayed properly. It’s possible the wrong glue was used in the matting process, or the wrong glass used for the frame itself. The consequence being that some prints were left discolored by light, a few even had bubbles appear under the print (due to bad glue or expansion/condensation of the paper itself).
My view is that a print should last a lifetime, but we don’t all have the means to make this a reality (proper display and storage requires attention to: humidity, temperature, and light) (the following link has some great information for those who are curious). Metal Prints require none of the extra care, they can be displayed outside in the rain, or inside under direct sunlight. They will not warp, they will not bubble, and in fact in a recent study Metal Prints were proven to last 2-4 times longer than top quality prints.
Additionally many of the most highly regarded photo papers use nano-pearl metallic fragments embedded in the paper itself. The addition of metal provides enhanced binding and reflective properties. This all holds true for printing directly on metal as well – leaving direct metal printing as the obvious choice for color, reflective properties, and longevity.
